Details That Make The Difference: 2010 Altima Sedan vs. Accord and Camry

2010 Altima Sedan vs. Accord and Camry

DETAILS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

Details Make the Difference - 2010 Altima vs. Accord and Camry

Altima Sedan and its two primary competitors,Honda Accord and Toyota Camry are remarkably similar in many respects. They are about the same size, have similar performance numbers, and offer many of the same safety, comfort, and convenience technologies. But when you take a closer look, the details reveal Altima’s advantages Victoria Nissan conducted side-by-side evaluations of a 2010 Accord EX-L (4-cylinder), a 2010 Camry XLE (V6), and an Altima 2.5 S with SL Package to discover what sets Altima Sedan apart.

 Engine Compartment

A look under the hood reveals some Altima durability advantages. Both Accord and Camry locate their ABS actuators inside the passenger-side front fender where they are exposed and can be damaged more easily in the event of a crash. In contrast, Altima’s ABS actuators are located behind the engine on the bulkhead, where it is more protected.

Altima's ABS Brake actuators are protected at the back of the engine compartment.

Center Dash Controls

The Nissan Altima has an easy to use dash with intuitive access to all controls.

Once seated in each car, your eyes are naturally drawn to the controls on the center dash. Whether you like the design of the center dash or not is largely a subjective opinion. However, there are some functional considerations to point out.

Accord has an array of large buttons and switches that bulge out from the dash. A large round button dominates the bottom of the control panel, yet its only function is to scroll through a given menu and act as a conventional Enter button. The standard display recessed in the upper dash has a monochrome screen.

Camry’s basic center dash configuration is simpler and more straightforward, but it too has a monochrome information display. A color display and backup camera are available on Accord and Camry only when they’re equipped with a navigation system.

Altima’s controls are simpler and more intuitive. In addition, an upgraded display screen is within reach for more buyers. A 4.3-inch color display is available as part of the Bose® audio system and includes a RearView Monitor. The main point is that Nissan buyers can get a color display and RearView Monitor in Altima without having to buy a navigation system.

 Center Console

Altima's Easy to Use Center Console with 12 volt plug inside

Accord’s center console has a single-level storage box. Inside the box is a conventional auxiliary input jack and a 12-volt outlet. There are two fixed cup holders in the center console that cannot be removed for cleaning. The hand-operated parking brake is standard on both manual and automatic transmission models. While a hand-operated parking brake is convenient when operating a manual transmission, it can hinder access to the center console.

Camry has a bi-level center console box with a tray that’s removable. The problem is if you remove the tray, where do you store it? Two fixed cup holders, a coin tray, and a 12-volt outlet are located in front of the storage box. Just like the Accord, Camry’s cup holders cannot be removed for cleaning. In front of the shift lever is a small storage compartment with a USB port and another 12-volt outlet. However, you have to locate both by feel because they are difficult to see. In contrast, Altima’s center console has a bi-level storage compartment with a sliding armrest, coin storage, a 12-volt outlet, and an easy-to-reach USB port. The upper level tray folds up to allow access to the storage box without having to remove the tray. Finally, the cup holder inserts can be removed for cleaning.

Front Door Pockets

Altima's door pockets are designed to a hold a bottle securely in place.

Accord has a fairly large front door pocket with a shaped front that will hold a bottle. However, there is no divider to hold the bottle in place. Camry’s front door pocket is narrow and cannot hold a bottle. Furthermore, Camry’s rear doors have no pockets or bottle holders at all. In contrast, Altima’s front door pockets are designed with tabs to hold a bottle in place, and the rear doors have bottle holders as well.

Glove Compartment

Both Accord and Camry have small, unlighted glove compartments.

Altima’s bi-level glove compartment has a light, it’s much larger, and it includes separate storage for the owner’s manual.

Rear Seats

Accord’s 1-piece rear seatback folds down to reveal a wide trunk opening, and it has a lockable pass-through. However, because it’s a 1-piece seatback, you can’t seat a rear passenger and store larger, long cargo at the same time, and the only way to lower the seatback is by using a lever in the trunk.

All Camrys except the top-of-the-line XLE have 60/40-split folding rear seatbacks. The XLE does not have a folding seatback at all, only a lockable pass-through. Instead, the XLE has a 40/20/40-split reclining seatback although the reclining angle is not very significant.

All Altimas have 60/40-split folding rear seatbacks that allow for both a rear-seat passenger and storage of long items. The seatbacks can also be locked in the upright position to prevent unauthorized access to the trunk, and they can be lowered either from inside the passenger compartment or the trunk.

Seat Track and Releases

Accord has Honda’s old-fashioned push/pull trunk and fuel door release switch. But what happens if you accidentally pull on the switch when you meant to push it to open the fuel door? That’s right. You have to go close the trunk. Also notice the exposed bolt that holds the seat track in place, but gives the interior an unfinished look.

Likewise, Camry has an exposed bolt securing the seat track. It also has floor-mounted trunk and fuel door releases that can be confused with each other.

Altima’s seat track bolts are covered by trim pieces and molding, giving the interior a more finished look. The trunk release is located on the lower left dash, and only the fuel door release is on the floor. That way you won’t accidentally open one when you want the other.

More Details That Make a Difference

Here are a few additional details that give the Altima the edge over Accord and Camry:

  •  Body side moldings help protect the finish of the vehicle from parking lot dings and scratches. They’re standard on all Altimas, but available only as an accessory on Accord and Camry.
  •  Folding outside mirrors help protect them from damage. They are standard on Altima and Accord, but Camry’s mirrors fold only rearward.
  • Individual rear reading lights are standard on Altima. They’re an extra-cost option on Camry and not available on any Accord.
  •  Intelligent Key with Push Button Ignition is standard on all Altimas, but you can’t get it on any Accord. Camry offers something equivalent called Smart Key System with Push Button Start. However, it’s available only on the SE and XLE V6 trim levels.

 Conclusion

Quality and value are two key attributes of all Nissan vehicles. Stop by Victoria Nissan and see that the details really make the difference.

Nissan Bluetooth Technology enhanced for 2010 – “Speaker Adaptation” feature for those with distinct accents and dialects

Posted by hutchpine on December 23, 2009

Nissan's Bluetooth Speaker Adaptation Technology

Do you have a distinct accent or dialect that makes your Nissan Bluetooth Phone system difficult to program? If yes, then this post is the help you need.

New for 2010, Nissans equipped with Bluetooth have a new “Speaker Adaptation” feature that  listens to your specific accent and learns how to best respond to your commands.

The Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System is programmed to respond when voice commands are spoken clearly and without speech variation. This can be challenging, if not frustrating, for drivers with accents or regional dialects. Speaker Adaptation helps users overcome this problem by allowing them to program the pronunciation of certain voice commands. Users can “train” the hands-free phone system to recognize their particular speech patterns or inflections by repeating a series of training phrases. The system stores a different voice adaptation for each user and Bluetooth®-paired phone.

Speaker Adaptation is available on all 2010 Nissan vehicles with hands-free phone systems. For vehicles that do not have a navigation system, Speaker Adaptation works only with the hands-free phone system. This article focuses on the features for vehicles without a navigation system. Navigation-equipped vehicles have a more sophisticated system that offers voice control of more functions.

A few things to keep in mind about the feature.

  • Speaker Adaptation can be programmed for up to two drivers in vehicles without a navigation system (the feature accommodates up to three drivers in vehicles with navigation).
  • You can look up the specific speech training phrases in most 2010 vehicle owner’s manuals. However, customers don’t need to refer to the list to successfully program Speaker Adaptation.
  • Once Voice Recognition is assigned a language, Speaker Adaptation operates only in that given language. Programmable languages include English, Spanish, or French (Canadian) but not any combination of the three.

Setting Speaker Adaptation

Here’s an overview of how to set Speaker Adaptation. Be sure to refer to the vehicle’s owner’s manual for details:

Phone/Send Button

  1. Park in a reasonably quiet outdoor location with the engine running and the parking brake on.
  2. Press the Phone/Send button for more than five seconds
  3. The system announces: “Press the Phone/Send button for the hands-free phone system to enter the speaker adaptation mode.”
  4. Press the Phone/Send button.
  5. Voice memory A or B is selected automatically. If both memory locations are already in use, the system will prompt you to overwrite one. Follow the instructions provided by the system.
  6. When training is finished, the system will tell you that an adequate number of phrases have been recorded.
  7. After registering, voice adaptation is complete.

The voice adaptation mode will stop if:

  • The Phone/End button is pressed in voice adaptation mode.
  • The vehicle is driven during voice adaptation mode.
  • The ignition switch is turned to the OFF or LOCK position

Speaker Adaptation offers Nissan drivers a personalized driving experience. Drive safely!

Nissan GT-R Engine – Class Leading Features

Posted by hutchpine on December 9, 2009

Nissan GT-R Engine – Class Leading Features

Victoria Nissan in Victoria, Texas is the area’s only GT-R Certified Dealer. Victoria Nissan has factory trained experts in both the advanced technology, and the everyday comforts of the GT-R. Today we’re going to share some of the technology that make the GT-R a class leader in performance.

The Nissan GT-R is powered by a 3.8-liter DOHC 24-valve V6 engine with twin turbochargers, code-named VR38DETT (DOHC Electronically controlled Twin Turbo). This 485 horsepower powerhouse has several features make this high-performance engine one of the most advanced among its competitors.

Twin Turbochargers

Twin Turbochargers integrated into the exhaust manifold

Twin Air-to-Air Intercoolers deliver charge air to two independent intake plenums

Twin Air-to-Air intercoolers

Two high-performance turbochargers — one per cylinder bank — deliver a maximum 10.2 pounds of boost to two independent intake plenums via twin air-to-air intercoolers. Both turbochargers are integrated into the exhaust manifold to provide quick response. The intercoolers make intake air cooler and denser for better combustion and therefore higher performance.

The turbochargers are developed by IHI (Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd.). IHI is a leader in turbo development and supplies many race car turbo systems. The GT-R turbo system is based on a design originating from Nissan Racing Engine development.

Plasma-Sprayed Cylinder Bores

Plasma Sprayed Cylinder Bores - The chemical coating applied by the plasma-spraying process is significantly thinner than conventional liners

Aluminum-alloy cylinder blocks typically require steel liners (sleeves) for the cylinder bores to help maintain the shape of the cylinder bores and resist wear. GT-R’s engine uses an advanced plasma-spraying process to apply a chemical coating to the cylinder bores. This process results in an extremely hard and smooth surface that eliminates the need for steel liners.

The coated cylinder bores dissipate heat very quickly, enhancing power output and fuel efficiency. Because the coating is significantly thinner than steel liners (0.15mm vs. 2.6mm), it reduces engine weight by 6.6 pounds without sacrificing strength or durability.

Secondary Air Management System

A secondary air management system provides faster catalyst activation at cold start-up to reduce emissions and achieve LEV2/ULEV certification. The system includes an independent pump, air cleaner, and mass air flow (MAF) meter. The system brings the catalytic converters up to operating temperature very quickly to provide for reduced cold start emissions.

 Thermostatically Controlled Engine Oil Cooler

Nissan GT-R Thermostatically Controlled Oil Cooler

A thermostatically controlled oil-cooling system helps maintain a consistent engine oil temperature. When the oil reaches certain temperatures the oil cooler increases the available oil cooling area to keep the oil at optimum temperatures.

Lateral Wet and Dry Sump Oiling System

Lateral wet and dry sump oiling system with magnesium oil pan

The g-forces generated during high-speed cornering can interfere with the proper circulation of oil within the engine. To counteract this problem, GT-R uses a lateral wet and dry sump oiling system that helps prevent oil backflow into the cylinder head area during high-g maneuvers. This “crossover” oil return system controls draining so that at high lateral g-forces, oil flows from the left head to the right side of the block (or vice versa). In addition, a dedicated oil scavenger pump carries oil away from the bottom of the turbochargers.

Hand-Built

Every GT-R engine is hand-built in a clean room

Like some exotic sports cars and aircraft engines, GT-R’s engine is hand-built by a single craftsman in a clean room environment. In addition, engine output is measured at partial and full loads prior to shipment from the Yokohama engine plant.
